Preventing Child Misbehavior Through Proper Communication
Expert opinion and detailed information
Mother and father are the first individuals with whom the child communicates at home. Communication is very important for the child to grow up with self-confidence, to express themselves correctly, and to eliminate wrong behavior.
When your child does something you don't approve of, if you use "I" language, you don't target their personality or make them feel guilty. For example, saying "I feel sad" instead of "YOU make me sad" will be a much more correct way of communication.
Body language makes the child open to conversation and cooperation. When you want to talk to your child about something, speak at a close distance, adjusting your height to match their eye level, and face to face.
Be clear when reflecting your feelings to your children. For example, when saying "I'm sad" or "I'm angry", clearly explain the reason. If you don't make a clear explanation, your child may think of things that wouldn't even occur to you and draw very different conclusions from the situation.
Accept your child in all aspects, strong-weak, adequate-inadequate, in all their aspects. Comparing your child with another child means rejecting them.
"Active" listening, or rather listening to understand your child, will help you understand the real feelings and thoughts underlying what they're saying.
